Who knew face masks could be both stylish and useful? Make your own face covers for a surgical mask with your favorite pattern and then wear it to help reduce the chances of bacteria spreading. Even though this mask cover can’t stop germs 100% of the time, you can still say ‘hello’ to staying healthy and ‘see ya later’ to not getting sick.
*Please note that the CDC does not consider homemade masks personal protective equipment (PPE) and will only be used by professionals as mask covers or when no other alternative is available.
If you need size or design modifications to this shape, want to create your own design, or need this design to be compatible with a different machine, please contact Custom Shape Pros.
Step 1
Cut two of the larger rectangles from both types of fabric, one rectangle of each fabric will be used per mask.
Step 2
Pin three 1" folds/pleats on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks/pleats are all going in the same direction (the finished mask should be at least 3.5 inches in height and 6.75 inches in length when pleats are not expanded).
Step 3
Press pleats to hold.
Step 4
Place two pleated rectangles together, right sides facing.
Step 5
Place ends of tie straps in the corners between layers.
Step 6
Sew around the rectangle with 1/4" seam allowance leaving a 2-inch gap along with one of the long sides for turning. Reinforce corners and ensure tie straps are secure by sewing forward and backward at the corners.
Step 7
Turn the mask inside out and press flat, keeping 1/4" seam allowance pressed toward the inside of the mask at the opening.
Step 8
Sew around the edge of the mask twice to secure. the tucks and close the opening.
*Make sure to use ¼” seam allowance while sewing.

Die Tips and Maintenance
- Use cutting plastic or mat (sold separately) that matches size of the die.
- For best results, cut with die blades running under roller at an angle. Do not cut with blades parallel to roller.
- Dies cut face up in AccuCut machines so it's easy to see what you're cutting.
- Place desired side of paper or other material face down on foam side of die.
- If you are cutting fabric, a thread or two may remain where die blades meet. Snip threads with scissors.
- To extend life of die, clear scraps of paper, chipboard and other material from under the die when cutting.
- If desired, use adhesive roller to clean paper and lint from dies. Use die pick or tweezers to remove any material caught between blades and foam.
- Die blades never need to be sharpened.
